Grand Central Arena Teaser Trailer and Website are LIVE!
SEE the Video! VISIT the Website! TELL your fiends friends!

The Teaser Trailer for GCA is now up at YouTube. It ends with a slide leading you to the Official Site for Grand Central Arena and for my other books. (eventually I'm going to get a more generic domain and this will form the nucleus of the site for everything).

    Give VERY SPECIAL thanks to:

[info]keithmm for the magnificent video footage of the Holy Grail. (plus one image of his concept for Ariane!)

[info]marydell for the kickass images of the three main characters (she's also promised to at least figure out some mugshot/passport photo images for the others).

[info]kayshapero for her work in making a nice, clean, not-too-complicated but professional looking site!

So go look when you have a chance, and if you like what you see, send it to anyone else you think might like it!

    MFF & Mario
    MFF
    -------------

Gan & I will be there for the weekend :) I'll be at my table in the Dealer's Room part of the time, feel free to come by and get some art! Rest of the time I'll probably be running around in suit causing problems for others :D Hope to see many familiar faces as well as meet new ones!

    New Super Mario Bros. Wii
    --------------------------------

Oh my God multiplayer is MADNESS. If some stages are hard in just single player mode, they are BAT$HIT in multi-player. Especially stages that require constant speed-running, where you have to dodge, I dunno, LAVA WAVES and the screen is scrolling and things are blowing up -- if you have one of the group that's a straggler that just won't do. It's madness... madness I say! We had various friends over during the weekend to play, and it always degenerates into laughing, screaming and fitful accusations with a whole lot of arm waving :D I turn into a giant pile of screaming arms when I play that game. Think of a sea urchin, just less cute.

Oh but it hurts sooooooooo goooooooooood. I never played the original DS New Super Mario until very recently, and so this is really the first 2D Mario I've played since... oh wow, Super Mario World. I am so thrilled, and the game is super cute. And challenging. My skills have degenerated in my old age :(

I like having a Yoshi and eating other players who don't >:D ho ho ho

November 16, 2009: Fifteen Years Of Daily Illumination

Fifteen years ago today, we started the Daily Illuminator to tell our online fans what we were up to on a (mostly) daily basis. It was an experiment, but it worked. It's still going strong today, which makes the Daily Illuminator one of the first blogs on the Internet! As far as we know, it's the oldest one that's still getting updated regularly. In the beginning you can see that we weren't even sure what to call it, since the term "weblog," let alone "blog," would not become widespread for years.

So, for 15 years, the DI has brought you product announcements, sneak peeks at games in development, convention reports, comings and goings of staff, general musings about the industry, and things we thought were just plain cool. So hop on over to the archives and take a stroll down memory lane, or find out what we were doing on your birthday back in the 20th century.

(I'd appreciate feedback on this one as it was written in one pass, while I was ill. And it feels sorta "off")

"This is fan fiction for the Whateley Academy series. It may or may not match the timeline, characters, and continuity, but since it's fan fiction, who cares? Dog's gonna give me a freakin' heart attack...
Last night, Gina collapsed in the yard. Just kinda curled up and fell over. Scared the everlovin' bejeezus outta me, let me tell you. So, I run over, pick her up (and she's not big on being picked up) and carried her inside. I decided to give her a couple minutes, rather than rushing off to the emergency vet right that second, because well, I didn't want to be driving if she decided that it was her time to head to the bridge. Not a good idea, y'know.

Needless to say, I called Liam in hysterical tears, because well, she's his dog. Yeah, that's me. Cool and calm and collected. Right.

She was breathing okay... not great but okay, and after about 15 minutes, she kinda sat up and looked at me like "well, that sucked, what happened???" After that, I decided to wait on heading to the emergency vet until and unless she seemed to be in more distress. So, I laid there with her for a while, and decided that I needed to get to bed.

Before I crawled in bed, I decided to check on her one more time and I walk out into the living room, and Gina's gone. Little idiot is up and wandering around! She did drink some water so that made me happy.

This morning, she's gotten up, gone to the bathroom and is currently curled up on the floor.

    :)

Silly puppy. Your step-mom isn't sure how much more of this she can live through...

November 15, 2009: Halloween Games and Costumes

    Castle Panic is awesome

As promised, we've created a page for all the costumes from our Halloween Game Day. This year we had some excellent ones: Ben as Hamburgler, Alex as Rorschach, Justin as Sweeny Todd, and Jimmie as the Monster in the Darkness. But even the subtle ones were fun, from Will's monkey half-mask to Barbara's antenna. And SJ's freaky eyes . . . it was disconcerting to play a game across from those!

And play games we did! From Pandemic and Castle Panic to Incan Gold and Roll Through The Ages: Bronze Age, we gamers did what we do best. A ton of fun was had by all, and much sugar was consumed.

Now it's back to work -- at least until the Christmas Game Day!

    Dear Moxie and Moose,

I went out to get milk, not trek the Himalayas. I was gone for 15 minutes, not 15 years. Please get OFF MY ASS and let me move.

    Love,
    Mom

    Dear Gina DogFace,

I know you're confused and can't see too well right now. I know you're struggling to relearn where everything is, and not being able to get out of the way of the Great Dane is hard on your old bones. I'm trying to keep y'all separated and keep him from bowling you over. You have been so sweet through all of this, including the enucleation. You'll learn where things are soon and you'll stop running into walls. You're the sweetest dog I've ever known, and if I've kept you here out of selfishness, I hope you'll forgive me. The vet promises me we're managing pain well, and you're still eating and drinking like a champ, so I think you'll still willing to be here on this earth.

    I love you, dogface girl.
    Step-mom

    Dear God,

Please help me be the person my dogs think I am. Please help me know when it's time to let Gina go, and not let me keep her here because I'm selfish. Please give her a little guiding hand now and then so she quits running into the same wall.

    Thanks,
    Me.

My radioactive bladder and other notes

    • Saw the oncologist Thursday. Got to see the results of the PET scan.

    • My guts are amazingly cool. Knowing that bits of my spleen had regrown is one thing. Seeing them on a computer screen? Awesome.

    • My bladder (and kidneys, to a lesser extent) were bright on the scan. Turns out that they were already sweeping the radioactive sugar from my body.

    • Fear my Glowing Bladder of Death!

    • As cool as it was, the results were still inconclusive. So a needle biopsy is going to be scheduled.

    • We've ruled out some of the major malignancies like pancreatic cancer. If it is a cancer, it's probably a return of the Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

    • Let's hope for "Doug is just weird"

    • Finally got my truck into the shop. We had an appointment two weeks ago, but then I got this flu bug...

    • I really like the Ford dealership. They care about the vehicles they service, and explain things in clear terms.

    • Darby got a clean bill of health. I'm happy to have my ride back

    • [info]kshandra is happy that she doesn't have to get up at Oh-God-Thirty to drive me in anymore.

    • I'm determined to de-clutter our lives. We're pack rats and have been hauling boxes of junk around for two decades.

    • To that end, today I'm taking a chainsaw to my RPG collection, including the Traveller stuff.

    • I have some rare/collectible stuff. It's all going to go up on eBay at fire sale prices.

    • At this point I really don't think I've touched some of the stuff on that shelf in years. It can go.

    • And we could use the money, and the space.

    • My plan is to get the living room done. Cleaned, organized, and not looking like a major earthquake just hit.

    • Then do the bedroom. Then the spare room/storage space.

    • Each step will be accompanied by eBay/Freecycle/Goodwill dumping of crap.

    • Hell, we still are hauling around the Win 3.1 box!

    • Still dithering about Thanksgiving wines.

    • Work continues to be a source of amusement and annoyance. We're really starting to see the winter slow down in construction affecting our volume of orders.

    • We've started using a hand held scanner for signatures. When it works, it's great.

    • Is it too early for a microwave burrito?

    • There is no Civ IV note. The Civ IV tag is a lie!

Parents? Folks with friends with kids?
I've got an idea for a scene in a story. But I'm uncertain about how to make it work.

Basic idea is that a semi-passable crossdresser is out for the evening near a "tranny" bar/club. She sees a friend's kid on the sidewalk and asks where her mother is. Then she goes to lead the kid to mom. Bigots see the "guy in a dress" leading off a kid and jump to the conclusion that it's a child-molester trying to kidnap a kid.

What I'm having trouble with is figuring out how exactly the kid (say 5-7) got away from a mom who is at all responsible long enough to be out on the sidewalk and at least several doors (shops/businesses) away.

Any suggestions? I know kids can move like lightning, especially at that age.

Best I've come up with so far was kid slipping away during a bathroom run.

November 14, 2009: Illuminated Site of the Week: Sun Of A Gun

    Illuminated Site of the Week:

Remember Rob Cockerham? We mentioned him back in January of 2003. He's the guy who wanted to become the super-shopper by having an army of "cloned" superstore buyers' cards all linked back to him.

Well, it turns out this guy doesn't have an "off" switch – he's always up to some prank or another. It all starts as good fun, but as the light sharpener project shows, eventually one goes mad with power. Now an evil super-genius, he turns his intellect to the task of destroying the world one stick of butter or can of cola at a time. See the many steps required to build such an awesome weapon, and tremble at the thought that if he ever figures out how to point it at the ground at midday, he can liquidate us all.

    Still sick
but hopefully it's almost over. Sometime late Wed or early Thurs, my nose quit imitating a faucet. And the fever peaked sometime around then too (101.9 was the highest reading I got)

Apparently it wasn't the flu as my stomach and the other end of my digestive tract have been well behaved. So it's just "the cold from hell" that I get occasionally.

Last night was the onset (and thankfully, a few hours later, the end) of the "try to cough large amounts of crud out of the lungs" stage. I'm very happy that's over with, especially as many times that stage has lasted for days.

Still a bit stuffed up in the head and achy in places, but I'm probably mostly ok now. We'll see.

Next bit is to be able to stay upright for extended periods. Well, I *can*, but I think my spending most of the time horizontal helped a lot. In the past, this soprt of thing has dragged on for more than a week. Guess I'm acquiring some wisdom with the gray hairs.

TheFull-power (as in, assume I have lots and lots of power to back it up) version of "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu", the duplicate-yourself power from Naruto. It has an INCREDIBLE number of applications in real life as well as in superhero situations, especially when you have enough power to manage not just one, but dozens or even hundreds of yourself.
